Perched on the top of a hill, between the Fiumicello and Monocchia streams and enclosed within its ancient medieval walls, Montefano overlooks a gentle and harmonious landscape: from the Macerata hills, the view stretches out to the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. The village has preserved the charm of time: the ancient entrance tower, the quiet red-brick alleys, and the birthplace of Pope Marcellus II, a witness to a deep and layered history. At the heart of the village stands the Town Hall, crowned by the Civic Tower, which houses the “La Rondinella” Theatre, an elegant 19th-century work by architect Virginio Tombolini, former technical director of Venice’s Teatro La Fenice. Across Piazza Bracaccini rises the Collegiate Church of San Donato, with its brick façade and paintings of profound spirituality. Nearby are the Church of Santa Maria della Confraternita and the 17th-century Convent of San Filippo Benizi, now home to a study center and a library. Montefano is also a land of art and culture. It is the birthplace of the renowned photographer Arturo Ghergo, a refined interpreter of beauty, to whom the Ghergo Museum is dedicated, located inside the Palazzo dei Priori. Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and sunflower fields, Montefano invites visitors to a slow and authentic discovery: a place where art, history, and nature intertwine in perfect harmony, in the bright heart of the Marche countryside.
